Does Technology make us "Dumber"?
As members of the modern world, we unlock our phones and glare into our glowy screens in order to check notifications, chat with friends, and play video games. Upon a cursory glance it may seem like phones - along with other technology - are a great innovation. Be that as it may, it also comes with negative side effects.
In the early days, people and students were required to search up things that they didn't know from a dictionary. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun does it? Imagine yourself shuffling along an immensely
huge dictionary all doing this for one word.
How annoying.
Thus, when modern phones and computers were invented, it was a big deal. You could google words, play games, and send emails all in one place, which in some people's opinion, is comforting.
Nevertheless, studies have unveiled that technology seems to have impact on the human brain.
In 2008, Nicholas Carr wrote, " Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy...Now my concentration starts to drift away after 2 or 3 pages."
From this, Nicholas suspected that medias on our devices are shifting our brain.
Afterwards, neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer named this term "digital dementia".
Technology also has an impact on the eye, a crucial organ that enables us to see. Dry and irritated eyes, loss of focus flexibility, and nearsightedness are just some of the consequences.
Likewise, digital media apps such as Twitter distracts us from the reality. It makes it even harder to focus on the work if you're constantly recieving and exchanging messages.
Avoiding screens as much as possible is important for our health.
Many are already seduced to the internet and many more use it and have negative effects. Though it is not inevitable for everyone to be lured towards screens, you can reduce screen time or ditch devices completely. Consequentially, technology is gradually causing us to become "dumber". Will you be imprisoned by screens at this moment?
