Macbeth

Literature, as we know it, has been permanently changed by William Shakespeare. Even a person with a lack of wit would recognize at least one of Shakespeare’s plays, quotes, and sonnets: Shakespeare is undeniably the most notable and influential playwright. His works have inspired countless artists. However, how is a person who lived centuries ago still internationally renowned today? Let’s look at one of Shakespeare’s best plays: Macbeth.

Marching in pride in their military uniform, Macbeth and Banquo, both generals in service of King Duncan, are returning victorious from war. At least that happened before the Three Weird Sisters approached them. With an air of suspense, the Three Weird Sisters prophesied Macbeth will move up the ranks and Banquo’s son will become king one day. Macbeth soon uncovered the first part of the prophecy was true, for King Duncan promoted him. Macbeth informed his wife of the news, and soon conspired and kill Duncan while under their ‘care’. The King has been murdered and ‘no-one’ knows who killed him or what terror will happen next.
“I am in blood, steeped in so far, that should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er”. Shakespeare portrays blood as guilt. Macbeth, with his hands covered with gory evidence of the King’s death, feels that the blood has stepped into his body and into his soul, so will remain there eternally. Macbeth also quotes: “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood?”. He says this while unable to wash his hand, covered with blood. After the murder, Donalbein announces: “There’s daggers in men’s smiles”. This implies when men smile, they are smiling while waiting for the perfect moment to strike with their dagger. The next time you see your friend smile, make sure to be careful.

"I'll go no more: I am afraid to think what I have done; look on't again I dare not.” The theme of Macbeth can be emphasised no further than what Macbeth has quoted. Macbeth undeniably has greed for power: Macbeth murders Duncan and his guards which makes him king. However, he is engulfed in guilt. Crime, betrayal, and treachery are also themes in Macbeth: symbolised by blood. Likewise, ambition is what causes Macbeth’s death leading him to his final words in a duel with Macduff. Be careful what you wish for. You might get what you desire - such as becoming a king - but it may result in a fate similar to Macbeth.
Macbeth and Shakespeare are extraordinary: they reflect the many struggles humans face. The synopsis is written by the best playwright known to history but the play involves countless depictions of violence. Not that child friendly. However, the memorable quotes and the themes wash the evidence of King Duncan’s death and daggers off. Macbeth’s reign has ceased. Nonetheless, the future of the new king is unknown. Why don’t we go to the Three Weird Sist'rs and asketh them?
